As a course coordinator, over the last few years, I’ve encountered a number of questions and queries that people have about getting into this field. Today as a part of this blog post I will try to answer some of the questions that people have asked me personally and some questions taken from the internet.

Is there an Entrance Exam for Sound Engineering?
No, most Audio Engineering and Music Production Courses will ask you for an Audition Tape or a performance tape as a prerequisite for you to enroll for this course. Since Sound Engineering requires a talent that cannot be graded just through an exam, the ability of the student is understood via Personal One on One meetings with either the faculty or the Course-coordinator.

Is there a demand for Sound Engineering?
Yes and No. There is a demand for engineers on the more technical side of the industry but the demand solely depends on where the industry is growing. The past couple of years have seen tremendous growth in the industry especially in the direction of “Film Sound”.
The demand for this field has increased since a lot more independent film-makers are creating their own content and are working with smaller and newer teams that might have not gotten that exposure otherwise.

How long are Sound Engineering Courses?
Various institutes offer Courses of different durations, if you were to opt-in for a Degree Course, which will essentially be a Mass Media and Communications Degree with Sound Engineering as an added subject, these courses will usually be about 3 years long.
There are other institutes that offer this same information of a 3 year course condensed into 1 year not focusing on anything else besides audio engineering.

Is Maths and Physics Compulsory for Sound Engineering?
No, Maths and Physics are not Compulsory to enroll for Sound Engineering. Although some courses like FTII and SRFTI do require you to have +2 subjects to be science.

What is the Salary of a Sound Engineer?
If you want to get into this industry to make money, then youre looking in the wrong place.
Don’t get me wrong, Audio Engineers make a lot of money, but rarely do people who get into the industry with the goal of making money ever survive. The pay scale differs from seniority and experience, the average pay range of an Audio Engineer is between 4L – 7L a year.

How important are degrees in Sound Engineering?
Being an employer myself, I rarely look at the Degree of an Audio Engineering or the Institute that they’ve completed the course from. In my opinion, Degrees don’t have too much of a value, what does, is your portfolio and profile of your work as an Engineer or Producer.

Is it advisable to do a Masters after you finish a course in Audio Engineering?
I usually ask students to pursue a Master’s course in their niche field of interest.
Students who come into the course don’t really know what their strengths and interests in the field of audio are, Once they have a general overview of which direction they want to take their career in then they can pursue a course in that specific field.
This course could be in a field like Audio Electronics, Acoustics, Recording Arts, etc
